What in the world is Diatomaceous Earth?
Diatomaceous Earth.....DE for short. I have a terrible hard time pronouncing it for some reason. it does sound a bit science-y and strange, but it turns out it’s actually a natural product made up of fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. It’s a white powder - which surprised me. I guess I was expecting something more earth-like!
It helps us deal with bugs and pests because it kills anything with exoskeleton - however we can eat it even without ill effects. In fact you have likely eaten it many times. It's in lots of grain based foods because lots of grains are stored with diatomaceous earth to keep the bugs from eating the grain.
There is food grade DE and industrial grade DE. I’m only referring to food grade here. And there is a lot that can be done with this type of DE. Taken internally, it absorbs pathogens (like bacteria, heavy metals, pesticides, parasites, and more) and removes them from our bodies.
It’s a hard substance, making it perfect to “scrub” the built up crud out of our digestive track. I read somewhere that if diamonds are a 9, DE is a 7!
DE contains a substantial amount of silica along with more than 20 trace minerals. It is essential for the building of healthy bones and teeth, skin, hair, and nails, which is why it’s good for a couple of the things we’ll talk about today.
First up, if you have pest problem, this should be your go-to. While it is not bait (it won’t attract insects to it), when it gets on bed bugs, dust mites, cockroaches, ants, and fleas, it removes a portion the waxy coating of their exoskeleton, effectively causing them to dry out. I love that this is safe and natural way to deal with pests.
But get this……that is just the beginning
Dietary silicon improves joint health and strengthens bones! Evidence shows that there is a connection between silicon intact and better bone density. I’m all for anything that can improve joint health and we will be exploring this topic a lot more in depth.
DE is also ideal for skin health. it dries out harmful toxins and leaves behind cleaned, smoothed skin with little to side effects.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll look at several uses for diatomaceous earth. Today we’ll kick it off with a simple skin scrub. Some folks who have tried this see immediate results. This is much gentler than a sugar or salt scrub, and can actually be used on any problem skin area. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, we really ought to take better care of it. This recipe makes it simple!
Where to get it? your local amazon of course.....
DE Facial Exfoliator
1/2 tablespoon coconut oil, avocado oil, or similar
2 tablespoons diatomaceous earth
1-3 drops essential oil (such as lavender, frankincense, melaleuca, geranium)
Mix into a paste (Don’t inhale the DE as the fine powder can irritate your lungs
Apply the paste to your face & neck, moving fingers in a circular motion. Don’t worry, the DE is much softer and more gentle than most exfoliants. Leave on for 3-5 minutes. Rinse with warm water, avoiding eyes and mouth.
The DE will gently buff away dead skin, the coconut or avocado oil moisturizes, and the essential oils will support healthy skin. Perfect combination.
I just finished using this and my skin feels amazing. I love that it is quick and simple, leaves your skin feeling super clean and soft. Removing toxins from body includes removing them from our skin, so this is a great place to start if you are making lifestyle changes.
Next up we'll look at how DE can benefit us internally.
Have you used Diatomaceous Earth before?'
